Meals on Wheels volunteers deliver a hot, nutritious, lunchtime meal two to five days a week, depending on their location. Their service brings much more than a meal to our program participants. Volunteers provide peace of mind, connection and continued independence for our older neighbors and their families.
“Meals on Wheels helped my mother stay in her home, where she was most happy.” – Rebecca, participant’s family member
“When I deliver Meals on Wheels, I get to receive the tremendous gratitude from the recipients. They are grateful for both the nutritious meal and the visit by a person who cares about them.” – Susan, a 4-year volunteer
Meals on Wheels volunteer duties:
More than 400 kindhearted volunteers enrich their own lives by giving two to three hours once a week to deliver healthy meals, friendly connections and safety checks to our program participants. Other dedicated volunteers help pack meals in eight dispatch locations around Lane County.
Delivery:
Delivery volunteers deliver 15-20 meals one day a week starting between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. Each route is between 90 minutes and two hours. Volunteers use their own vehicle and may work in pairs or as a family! Some of our volunteers even set up teams of four at their office or organization so that each person volunteers just once a month. Delivery volunteers are required to pass a DHS background check prior to beginning their duties.
Kitchen Helpers:
Our kitchen volunteers work in teams to package food for our delivery routes.
